EU long-term resident and permanent residence — an indefinite permit instead of temporary cards

A decision granting EU long-term resident status (rezydent długoterminowy UE) or permanent residence (pobyt stały) has no expiry date. No more renewals every couple of years — you only replace the card itself: the resident card every 5 years, the permanent residence card every 10 years. It’s like renewing the photo in your passport: no need to collect documents again.

Two different routes

EU long-term resident

A route open to almost any foreigner who has lived in Poland legally for a long time. You need:

  • at least 5 years of legal stay;
  • a stable, regular income for the last 3 years — every month;
  • health insurance;
  • a B1 Polish language certificate (we book the exam for you). If you have a degree from a Polish university (bachelor’s or master’s), you don’t need the exam — we attach your diploma.

Permanent residence

Not for everyone — you need a special basis:

  • Pole’s Card (Karta Polaka).
  • Polish descent. We prove it with documents and build a family tree. Then comes an interview with the case officer about Polish history, culture and traditions — we go with you.
  • Marriage to a Polish citizen. You need at least 3 years of marriage and at least 2 years on a temporary card granted on the basis of that marriage. Until then we arrange temporary cards: if you’ve been married for less than a year, the first card is issued for 1 year and the next for 3 years.

How long it takes

EU long-term resident is one of the most extensive cases: the case officer checks your entire 5-year history and your income for every month of the last 3 years, and often asks for documents again. The official time limit is 180 days from the last request for documents, and the voivodeship office (urząd wojewódzki) may extend it once more. That’s why it’s so important to file a complete set from the start.

What we do

  • Choose the route that fits you.
  • Book your Polish exam and help you collect documents for 5 years.
  • File the application, answer the case officer’s requests and go with you to the interview.

Questions

What’s the difference between permanent residence and EU long-term resident?

Both are permanent residence permits, but the basis differs. Permanent residence is granted on special grounds (Karta Polaka, Polish descent, marriage), while EU long-term resident status is open to almost anyone who has lived and worked in Poland for a long time.

Do I need to collect anything when replacing the card?

No. The decision has no expiry date — you simply replace the card with a new one.
